Thank you for taking the time to read this blog and begin my adventure with me to Colombia. I will be there July 17- August 6, 2016. I have chosen to write my blog in English because family, friends, and other teachers reading this, may not know Spanish. I have been preparing in many ways for this adventure. First, I bought a larger suitcase that I can check in at the airport because I will be there for 19 days!! I plan to bring a carry on piece of luggage, a check in piece of luggage, and a backpack. Next I went to a travel clinic in Reno to get shots for Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and polio. I purchased pills for any problems with diarrhea (yuck!) and also pills for any issues with altitude sickness. Bogota is the third highest city in the world at 8,000 feet. I signed up for a Capitol One credit card because they are the only credit card that I know of that doesn’t have extra charges for purchases made abroad. I am practicing Duo Lingo daily since I found out I am going to Colombia. Duo Lingo keeps my Spanish fresh. I may be a Spanish teacher, but there is always new vocabulary to learn! My high school donated mementos- like mini backpacks with our high school name on them- to be given to students in Colombia. Thanks, McQueen High School!
I want my site to be interactive, so I have a survey in Spanish on this website intended for my Spanish students. It’s a competition where they submit their answers and the first 2 students per class with the correct answers are awarded extra credit. But, they have to read my D.C. travel information on this website to find the correct answers to the survey. A great way to get them to look at my website, learn about Colombia, and be motivated to follow me this summer on this blog! And please, my Colombia blog is for all of you. Please post comments at any point during my trip.
All of my Spanish students have to write a letter in Spanish to a Colombian student. The first paragraph is an introduction of themselves, the second is them asking the Colombian students about Colombia, and the third paragraph is them sharing their future post high school plans. I am hoping the Colombian students will write back to them in English. I will carry those letters back with me to the U.S. and share them with my students in the Fall. Looking forward to this adventure with you, Belle.
