This global education resource guide is for educators and students in the Washoe County School District in Reno, Nevada, as well as for friends and family. It's intent is for all of us to explore the world beyond the familiar and learn about new cultures, so that we can join together as world citizens and work together on world challenges. "Global education emphasizes the unity and interdependence of human society, developing a sense of self and appreciation of cultural diversity, affirmation of social justice and human rights, as well as building peace and actions for a sustainable future in different times and places." ( Australian Global Educators, Education Services, Australia) Global education means including in our curriculum current events, connections to real world challenges, and multicultural awareness. We need it to prepare our students to be college and career ready with relevant and challenging curriculum, to be responsible global citizens, and to be aware of their potential to help their community and the world. This Guide has been divided into sections. About is my personal background and an introduction to my mascot and traveling companion, Lorenzo. Survey is a pre assessment my students took online before my trip to Colombia. Study includes resources on how prepared McQueen High School is for global education and how to further implement global education into McQueen High School or other schools. Teach is actual globalized lesson plans and evaluations of global education units. D.C. Travel is my pre- Colombia blog where I met my National Fellows and Colombian Fellows for the first time. Colombia Blog is my day to day reflections and observations while in Colombia. My Research Question is my chosen topic of interest that I researched while in Colombia and my discoveries and reflections.

I never thought I stood a chance to be chosen for the Teachers for Global Classrooms (TGC), a teacher exchange program, with IREX and the U.S. Department of State. Since I am in my last four years of teaching, I almost didn't apply because I figured my age would be against me. But the word complacent has never been in my vocabulary. I constantly push myself to be a better person and teacher for my family and for my students. When I heard I had been chosen for this tremendous honor, I was taking roll at my computer and the message flashed across my screen. I literally gasped and immediately told my students the good news. They were just as excited as I was! This course has changed my life. It has made my teaching more purposeful and more relevant for my students. Thank you TGC, and I can't wait to travel to Colombia! I want to work with The Northern Nevada International Center when I retire and continue to promote global education.

To prepare myself for the trip to Colombia, I decided to get Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, and Polio shots, after spending time researching suggested vaccinations from the CDC. I also decided to go on Duo Lingo and improve my Spanish. I am a Spanish teacher, but I believe there is always room for improvement! I suggested it to my colleagues going to Colombia as well, because I liked it so much! At my level, I can get around any words I don't know by using other words (circumlocution), but after doing Duo Lingo, I have become more precise- I now know the specific words of specialized vocabulary in medicine, politics, the arts and science! I am now going to suggest Duo Lingo to my own students because I think it's a fabulous way to strengthen anyone's Spanish, at what ever level they are at. Oh and yes, I hooked my own husband as well! He's now on Duo Lingo- his choice, I swear! It's his first time ever taking Spanish. And guess what? Hubby and I are travelling to Spain in three weeks! My own children have gone global as well. Both visited Israel last year as part of The Birthright Program. One change sparks so many others....
